TV star Catt Sadler’s all-American, girl-next-door appeal has sky-rocketed her career from humble beginnings to the red carpet glitz and glamour of the A-list set. After starting in the newsroom of a local Indiana station in the Heartland of America, Sadler found her true calling. Though she now hosts The Daily 10 celeb news show on E!, the entertainment industry was never foreign territory. She straddled the line between “behind the scenes” and “on the set” for much of her life, starting from her early childhood plays, dance lessons and theater involvement and stretching to a journalism degree and work in local newsrooms. “When I was starting, I was kind of like the black sheep,” she says. “They were like, ‘Get a bobbed hairdo, earrings, pearls around your neck.’” She laughs before taking a sip of her chilled margarita. “I was like, ‘No, no, no. I will never conform to something I’m not.’ That’s just not me.” At just 22 years old, Sadler co-created The Groove, a dance show on her local Indy affiliate that she booked, wrote and produced out of her own pocket (to the detriment of her bank account). The yearning of the big stage kept calling and, on a whim, Sadler picked up one day and packed her bags for sunny California. In August of 1998, she scored a chance with the San Francisco WB/NBC affiliate. Sadler quickly became the host of her own segments, including “The Bay Beat,” a report on the local scene, and “Star Gazing,” her first foray into national entertainment news. “I kind of owe it to WB,” she says. “They took a really big risk and it worked out to my advantage. I thought I knew what I was doing! I had never read a prompter in my life.” Fast forward to today. The scene: a rock-inspired, leather-laced suite high atop Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, where Sadler looks quite at home surrounded by makeup artists and hair stylists, fluffing, powdering and perfecting every square inch of her already-flawless physique. Cameras snap and roll to document every moment of her transition from apple pie to stiletto-ed sex kitten. Few may know it, but she made her big-screen debut as an extra in the classic Indy film, Hoosiers, and even fronted a band. Sadler may be the epitome of the new generation of Hollywood “slashes” — as in, actress-slash-singer-slash-dancer-slash-TV host. So what’s a good girl like Sadler doing in Vegas anyway? Partying-slash-working, of course. E!, The Daily 10 and the Hard Rock have teamed up to host “Smashtime Saturdays,” which spotlights the young Hollywood, red-carpet crowd and their many celebrity friends. Special guests and performances are surprise treats every Saturday night, and the velvet ropes have parted for the likes of Akon, Carmen Electra, Bon Jovi and fellow E! network stars Ben Lyons and Sal Masekela. “I co-host the party at Body English on Saturdays at least once a month; I just get on the stage and rock the mic,” winks Sadler, a self-proclaimed karaoke junkie. “You know, I wouldn’t call it work; it’s not really work.” This summer, The Daily 10 is upping the ante by taking a road trip from Hollywood to Sin City for their first-ever live show on location. During the entire week of June 9, Sadler and her TV crew will broadcast live from the notorious Rehab pool party at the Hard Rock Las Vegas. “People who come to the Hard Rock come to get away from their lives, let loose and have fun,” Sadler says. “They want to be seen; they know the scene. Hard Rock, Rehab. It’s a great place to forget about your other life and indulge. Vegas is my dirty little secret.”
