Is That Dress Green?

Lindsey Pelliccia's Eco-Boutique

Is That Dress Green?

When you hear the phrase “going green,” energy-saving light bulbs and hybrid cars are the things that usually come to mind. However, designer Lindsey Pelliccia has given the phrase a whole new spin. By creating the first eco-friendly, semi-couture evening wear line, now women can dress up for any formal event while helping the planet.

Pelliccia’s clothes are an exact depiction of her experiences growing up and her connection with the world. “There were many things that inspired me to create this collection,” she says. “Mostly just memories. One dress in particular is inspired by my grandmother’s garden and all the beautiful flowers she had.”

Pelliccia has been designing for herself and others since she was about 13 and decided a couple of years ago to create gowns that are not only beautiful, but that are good for the environment as well. “My line is very comfortable, cute and unexpected,” Pelliccia says. Her main idea for the line is looking great and simultaneously helping the environment. “I definitely think that beauty and comfort go hand in hand,” she says.  “And the fact that I’m doing something good for the environment, makes it even better.”

Pelliccia’s gowns are created from un-dyed silk that is made in an environment-friendly manner. “I am not a Buddhist, but I do believe in many of the Buddhist principles. One of their main principles is to not harm any living thing,” says Pelliccia. “Which is why I use artisanal silk and I think people will be surprised at the feeling this silk has. I don’t think it is like anything people have ever felt before.”

Although the image of eco-friendly clothes may seem dull and grey, Pelliccia’s line is the complete opposite. “When people usually think of eco-friendly materials, they think of potato sack-type looks and boring colors. However, I love bright colors and you will see that in my collection,” she says. She also plans to create a line of casual clothes in the near future. “I definitely want to eventually create a more casual line and it’s going to be young and very colorful,” she says.

Pelliccia’s very first line was presented on April 11 at Miami’s Wynwood Art District.

“I am feeling both excited and nervous,” she says. “I just want people to get the feeling I get when I see my collection.”
