The Cove

This Summer's Must-See Film

The Cove

This past weekend, I got a note from Nadine Weil - 944's very own expert in all things eco (and founder of www.heartofgreen.com) inviting me to a VIP screening of a movie I'd never heard of, called The Cove. Hmmm, The Cove . . . sounded vaguely Blue Lagoon-ish, or maybe it was an adventure flick about someone getting marooned or something? Either way, I was bored and I like to go to the movies because they sell slushies. (btw, the slushies at The Embarcadero Theaters cost FOUR DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS – for a small. Ridiculous!) Anyway, not having any clue as to the subject of said film, I was a bit confused when I ran into Nadine in the lobby and said, “You may want to cover your eyes during the last two minutes of the movie, it's pretty brutal.” What? The castaways don't get rescued? Well, fast forward to curtain time...The documentary's purpose is laid out pretty clearly with in the first few minutes: to bring awareness to the issue of, and stop the slaughter and capture of dolphins in Japan. Alternately suspenseful, heartbreaking, informative and funny (yes, funny) this movie is an absolute must-see for armchair environmentalists, animal lovers, eco-warrior types, folks who eat seafood in Japan and people who visit marine theme parks or have ever taken part in a “swim with dolphins” experience. Did I close my eyes during the final scenes? Nope. Because I was so upset I had to leave the theater.
