This Joker's Not Funny
Photo Credit: hollywoodchicago.com | There's something awfully creepy about seeing a recently deceased actor on the trailer of a new film. What's sad is that the "something isn't right about this" feeling you get when you see them up on the screen is ironically enticing. In the midst of watching the comical trailers preceding "Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay" at the theater this past Saturday night, I felt a sudden and unexpected surge of discomfort when I saw Heath Ledger as "The Joker" in the preview for "The Dark Knight". Why is this? Could it be the idea that even after a tragic death we must watch Heath assume the role of a twisted, suicidal clown with a creepy laugh and hatred for society? Is it the weirdness of knowing that he won't be around to talk about his new role or profit from the monetary intake? I'm really freaked out about the idea that an actor can still be caught up in the hype of the media even after they depart from this world, and yet, I am guiltily anticipating the movie's release on July 18th.
Did this satirically morbid role contribute to Heath Ledger's supposed depression and experimentation with drugs? Did he delve too far into the character of Batman's arch nemesis? We'll never really know if this is true, or if Heath carried his role as far as the grave.
