California Supreme Court Allows Gay Marriage
In a 4-3 decision that claimed the law was discriminatory, the courts sent a stern message to the California state government, who has opposed gay rights over the past five years. While the victory is certainly impressive, it is by no means a final blow to the iniquitous law. In November, a proposed amendment petitioned by various right-wing groups will be heard at the state level. The Governator and former Kindergarten Cop, Arnold Schwarzenegger, will be a deciding factor in the decision and has twice before vetoed pro-gay marriage bills. Though the Supreme Court found marriage to be a constitutional right, opponents of the decision have asked the federal government to stay (which essentially means suspend) enacting the decision until the November ballot. Under United States law, the ruling will not take effect for 30 days, giving those who oppose civil rights for all citizens ample opportunity to petition for degradation. For those looking to support human rights, please visit any number of civil liberty Web sites to help send a message to California voters and government that laws were made to protect and guide, not hurt and repress.
