Baked to Perfection

Lately, I’ve had a quiche and mesclun salad obsession. The concept of buttery crust filled with a cheesy concoction of vegetables or meat paired with a fresh, green salad makes me salivate.

So any time I pass a French-looking bakery I walk in with the hopes of finding the perfect Quiche Lorraine (ham and cheese). Unfortunately, I have yet to be impressed. I have gone far and wide. I went to New York and found the Bouchon Bakery at Columbus Circle and ordered their quiche. It resembled a flan more than a quiche! The filling was watery and tasteless and I could barely taste the cheese.

I went to the Champagne Bakery in Westlake Village, Calif. and ordered another flan-like quiche. Finally, after much searching I found the shoe that fit.

Le Pain Quotidien (The Daily Bread) is a bakery that satisfies my quiche addiction. I order the Quiche Lorraine with smoked ham and gruyere cheese in the flakiest of crusts. It is accompanied by a mixed greens salad with a simple vinaigrette. The French recipe is a simple concept yet, so many fail to perfect. Le Pain's quiche is the first to be close to perfect. To finish off the pie theme of the meal, I order the amazing pumpkin pie. It has the richest and most prefectly spiced pumpkin filling and a dense graham cracker crust with a hint of almonds and lots of brown sugar.

Although Le Pain Quotidien is a franchise, its aesthetic makes it seem otherwise. Each location has a long, wooden, communal table along with petite wood tables all around and there is always a patio. The menu specials are written on a chalkboard on the wall and you can order mint lemonade or iced tea in a carafe. It's reminiscent of a small, Parisian café and has a consistent delivery every time. When you are in the West Hollywood area stop by the Melrose location, Third St. Promenade in Santa Monica and Ventura Blvd. in Studio City. You won’t regret it and you’ll be coming back for more.
