Nothing can spur me to support a fundraiser faster than the promise of Sting. When I heard that Grammy-winning Narada Michael Waldman had put together a musical phenomenon of epic proportions to raise money for his foundation (http://naradamichaelwaldenfoundation.com/), Christopher Rodriguez, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, I rushed out to secure my ticket to history. People, HE DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
No less than Bob Weir, former Solid Gold hostess Marilyn McCoo, famed mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, The Supreme’s Mary Wilson, and musicians who moonlight with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Tina Turner gathered on stage at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall to wow us. And yes, that was me stalking the halls backstage with a “borrowed” VIP badge looking hither and thither for Sting. No dice.
Remember that horrible news story about the boy who got shot by a stray bullet while at a piano lesson? Permanently paralyzed from the waist down, Christopher Rodriguez is now in sixth grade and studies piano at a local arts school. This was one of many joyous reason to celebrate music’s power to heal, and when Sting launched into Italian opera, I think I died, went to heaven, realized Sting wasn’t there, and came back again. Swoooon!
Note to self: If Narada is plannin’ it, I’m plannin’ to be at it.
