THE BEST BATHING SUIT FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
As we continue to travel through the Summer Months of 2009, the thought of boys, beaches, Bloody Mary’s, oh yeah, and those dreaded bikinis, is upon us. Look ladies’, getting dressed (or undressed) into the sexiest swimsuits of the season shouldn’t require a call to the Doc for an immediate refill of Xanax. In fact, it shouldn’t be a traumatic experience at all. With July’s 944 dubbed “The Travel and Swimsuit Issue,” it seems only appropriate for “Fashion or Fiction” to offer some quick tips in finding the best bathing suit for your body shape (literally)…and still leave some change left over for a second round of drinks.

HOURGLASS/CURVY: Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Scarlett Johansson
Often, girls with very proportionate bodies rock swimwear better than anyone else. If you’ve got (pardon the expression) T & A, you should certainly flaunt it. That said, there are still rules to follow. First, if you’re wearing a bikini, be sure the bottoms cut high on your leg to emphasize a narrow waist. Also, front and back should only be connected by a ring, buckle or string because less fabric over the hips draws less attention to them. As a rule of thumb, darker colors have an instant slimming effect, so if you’re looking to camouflage certain “problem areas,” wear dark browns, blacks, purples and blues.
One-pieces are always super sexy on curvy figures…and have fun with them. Look for embellishments, low-backs, and plunging necklines. Try Victoria's Secret for the Carmen Marc Valvo suit on sale from $145 to $108.
Just a note, hourglass girls should stay away from swimsuits with boy-shorts and skirts. They tend to draw attention to the thighs and make them look bigger.

TRIANGLE/PEAR SHAPE: Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Rihanna, Claire Danes
If you’re smaller on top, and bigger on bottom, all you have to do is distract the eye from your hips and thighs by wearing solids on the bottom, and prints/patterns and bright colors on top. Everyone will be instantly drawn to your chest (sorry, but true.)
And rock your abs in an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny, ok, you know how the song goes…but anyway, don’t be afraid to show off your abs!

Flirty bandeau bikini tops were made for your body type. Target sells a ton of colors, some less than $15. Can we say steal?? You can also go ultra low cut or skimpy with your top and not look vulgar or worry about showing too much. You can also add padding to a triangle-top to give a little oomph up top. Trust me, the boys will love it!
If you’re at all self-conscious about showing too much skin, try a bikini with boy shorts for a little extra coverage. Pear Shapes should skip skimpy suits in order to keep everything looking classy and streamlined.

INVERTED TRIANGLE/TOP HEAVY: Audrina Patridge, Pamela Anderson, Victoria Beckham, Katie Price
Well, let’s just say, if you’re biggest dilemma in life is having big tata’s, you’re doing pretty damn well. Remember though, there are still ways to bring out the best in your bathing-suit bod. Big-Chested girls should opt for a top with a lot of support. Underwire works wonders to give the lift you’ll need.

If you choose a triangle-top, be sure to tie it tight at the neck to prevent sagging and add cleavage. Make sure your top has enough coverage, too. I mean, we all want to show a little skin, but you don’t want to look like you were plucked from the corner of Hollywood Blvd. Check out bikinis that are sold separately at American Appeal ($8-$29 for bottoms) since you’ll probably wear a bigger size up top than on the bottom. Again, not such a dilemma.

RECTANGLE/BOY SHAPE: Cameron Diaz, Kelly Ripa, Kate Hudson, Paris Hilton
Being built like a long, straight, stretch of highway from LA to Vegas can be a major benefit when you’re trying to squeeze into an Herve Leger dress but if you want to play up your curves in a swimsuit, add girlie embellishments like ruffles, ties, and bows which will create a more voluminous illusion. Kate Hudson famously wore this Ruffled Brazilian Cut Bikini by Indah. I own one, myself, and swear by it!! For more info, got to www.indahclothing.com

The Monokini will be your best friend. It will accentuate your chest and hips and create a tiny waist line. Many of the other body types want to distract from certain problem areas, whereas you may want to draw attention to your figure by wearing bright, loud colors. Don’t be afraid to wear white. There’s nothing sexier than bronzed skin up against white slinky fabric.
Rectangles, to look less boxy, stay away from athletic-looking swimsuits or ones with too much material at the top. Halters, if not done right, can also add to boxiness.

Ladies, remember this; No matter your shape or size, we’re all beautiful in our own unique ways. I’ll be looking out for you at the beaches this summer. Peace!
