He rejected conventional stiff-and-staid poses and instead captured both motion and emotion in the faces of his subjects, often encapsulating their intrigue in a single charged moment. SFMOMA is proud to be the only U.S. venue for this retrospective that spans the artist's remarkable career. Featuring more than 200 photographs along with a selection of vintage magazines, the exhibition presents work spanning Avedon's entire career, from his earliest street scenes to his breakthrough 1950s Paris fashion pictures and the iconic celebrity portraits that brought him world renown. This in-depth retrospective reveals Avedon's singular ability to blur the lines between photojournalism, fashion photography, and fine art.
For all the details on this event and to RSVP, click through to 944.com.

There¹s a Mystery There: Sendak on Sendak

This fall, things get wild at the Contemporary Jewish Museum as it presents
There¹s a Mystery There: Sendak on Sendak, a major retrospective of over 100
works by Maurice Sendak, the famed author and illustrator of over 100
picture books who changed the course of children¹s literature forever with
his 1963 classic Where the Wild Things Are. On view September 8, 2009
January 19, 2010, this is the largest and most ambitious exhibition of
original watercolors and drawings from more than 40 of Sendak¹s books,
including his most beloved titles. It also features rare sketches,
never-before-seen working materials, and exclusive interview footage with
the artist.

Organized by the world¹s only repository of Sendak¹s work, The Rosenbach
Museum & Library in Philadelphia, the exhibition is a fascinating and
revealing journey into the artist¹s life and work for both children and
adults. Families gain a deeper understanding of the characters and stories
they love while adult audiences get an unprecedented opportunity to explore
the more mature and sophisticated ideas behind many of Sendak¹s beloved
tales, discovering how they were shaped by intensely personal stories and
influences his Jewish family life, childhood adventures in Brooklyn,
anxieties about the Holocaust and the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby and
more.

ADMISSION:
$10.00 adults, $8.00 students and senior citizens with a valid ID, and $5 on
Thursdays after 5 PM. Youth 18 and under free.
